Titania Welcomes Rt Hon Francis Maude at Office Opening

On Thursday the 20^th of November we will be joined by friends, partners and media in welcoming the Cybersecurity Rt Hon Francis Maude MP to cut the ribbon at our new headquarters in Worcester. 

As part of a cybersecurity campaign, in the lead up to Cyber Monday, the busiest day of the year for online shopping , the Minister will be travelling across the UK to promote awareness of increasing online threats. After discussing cyber defence strategies, with industry and academia, at the Cybersecurity Summit 2014, Rt Hon Francis Maude MP travels to the cyber valley, to deliver a speech and to officially open the building. 

Titania was founded 5 years ago by one information security professional, Ian Whiting, who wanted to replace the sometimes repetitive and time-consuming audit and report writing side of penetration testing with software that automates much of the network device auditing process. The Network Infrastructure Parser, developed by Ian, evolved into Nipper Studio, Titania’s flagship and most successful product.

Five years, and countless awards later, Titania has a new home where it will continue to develop and deliver trusted solutions to a community of information security professionals in over 60 countries.

Infosec 2014 Highlights

A week after Infosec, we can look back and say it was a great show. Twenty years on, it still successfully delivers insights into the dynamic market of information security. With 340 companies, of which 80 were new exhibitors, special country pavilions for 24 international representatives and a great wealth of products, tools and services, there was plenty on offer.

The discussions and panels were up to date with current changes to the economy, legislation and global trends in cybersecurity and experts, such as Peter Wood, Mikko Hypponen, Graham Cluley, Dr. Eric Cole, Rik Ferguson and James Lyne, attracted audiences with panel debates and thought-provoking updates on the industry.

      As cybercrime increases, cybersecurity will constitute a business driver in the future. 

Many speeches and presentations have brought fresh views for information security professionals, but the one we liked best was MP David Willetts’ keynote speech. The highlight of his keynote at Infosec has been the 2014 Cyber Security Breaches Survey launch. As he went through the highlights of the survey, he also reminded the audience of how the Cyber Growth Partnership "aims to increase the value of cyber security exports to £2bn a year by 2016". As cybercrime is a costly strain on UK business, cybersecurity can be a chance to boost the country’s economy.

  Meanwhile, Peter Wood, CEO at First Base Technologies, and a keen user of Nipper Studio, moderated a panel debate on "Security as a Business Enabler". The general consensus of the conversation was that while there's little evidence to support that information security actively brings in profits, global breaches have shown that they do drive away business. He also found time to drop by our stand for a quick catch up - Thank you, Peter!

   The Malvern Cyber Security Cluster is growing. 

   

      But for the cyber security companies trading from the “cyber valley”, there was good news as the Minister, David Willetts, congratulated the  7 winners of a total of £500 000 in investments for R&D from the Technology Strategy Board. 

      It was rewarding to see that the Malvern Cyber Security Cluster is taking centre-stage at an event such as Infosec Europe. D-RisQ Ltd, Montvieux Limited, PixelPin, C2B2, Infinite Precision Ltd, Babble IT Systems Ltd, Westgate Cyber Security Ltd deserve congratulations for their innovation and techniques in the cyber security industry. 

 Titania's software and updates proved attractive to visitors once again. 

Titania went to Infosec with great products, a relentless team, champagne and a lot of chocolate. We came back with fresh questions to answer, plenty of compliments and (sadly!) no more chocolate.

We saw an increased interest in compliance and security auditing this year, as well as answering a lot of questions on our upcoming product - TEC. We met lots of friends on the Malvern Cyber Cluster stand as we took turns to attend to the booth – Advent Security, Borwell, DeepSecure, UK Cyber Security Association, Sutcliffe & Co., Hedgehog Security.

 

At the end we bumped into Pen Test Partners when we went out for some well-deserved burgers. To our surprise the burgers did not come from their ad-hoc kitchen – apparently their “cooking” skills were a tad more sophisticated.

Four Years of InfoSec

Infosec Europe is turning 19 this year, but for Titania this is only the 4^th year. Here is the story of how we grew up alongside one of the most recognised shows in the information security industry. 

First Year - 2011

In our first year it was all about getting our tool – Nipper Studio – launched (an enhancement of the original tool Nipper) and into the hands of the people who needed it: pentesters. Titania came with an army of three and within a 2 x 2 stand space we demo'ed for three days.

Second Year - 2012

In our second year of Infosec we had tripled in staff numbers and doubled our product portfolio. This time 6 of our best people were there and ready to show off two products. We were also looking to find people interested in trying the ‘release candidate’ version of newest Paws Studio compliance software. 

Stress Free Cyber Security

We made an important addition to our product family – Paws Studio. The Titania team also grew bigger and we decided to help take the stress out of cyber security by giving away some stress balls and chocolate.

Third Year – 2013

Last year we had 7 people, and just as well, because we barely had a moment to catch a breath. In between spinning the wheel of fortune, talking to people, showcasing the products and catching up with old friends from the industry, we had our hands full. 

At the last show we also had some very popular umbrellas. In the spirit of the Great British Cyber Security theme, what can be more appropriate than an umbrella in London?

Our prize wheel gave visitors a chance to win free audits, an assortment of Union Jack themed prizes, such as mugs, piggy banks, umbrellas and t-shirts. We also had Nipper Studio and Paws Studio in full swing. Our team was counting 13 members and had a bigger stand so we could welcome even more people.

This year we have even more surprises. Everything's got bigger, the team, the company, the stand and the giveaways. You'll have to come and see us to find out what's new in terms of auditing, compliance and the best cyber security for your organisation. Without spoiling the surprise, we can assure you that Ian Whiting will be there to give demonstrations of each of our products for the entire three days. At the end of each presentation there will be a Q & A session and a surprise goody bag for all those who want them. Malvern Cyber Security Cluster

You can also find us at Stand C85 as part of the Malvern Cyber Security Cluster, along other members of the cyber valley. The partnership is a collaborative effort of cyber security SMEs in the Worcestershire area to raise awareness, encourage the development of cyber skills and address common issues for SMEs in the industry.

On each day of the event, members of the Cluster will be present to talk you through the variety of innovative products and solutions and share best practices on the common topic that brings us all together at Infosec: information security. Titania Joins the Briefing Sessions at Security & Policing 2014

The Security & Policing event hosted by the Home Office at the Farnborough FIVE expo site is a unique opportunity to showcase sensitive cutting edge technologies and confidential products and solutions to police services, governmental departments and agencies from the UK and overseas.

This year’s event will focus on the expansion of an international delegate program, aiming to improve the UK’s export activities. The visitor delegation program will include top decision makers in key areas of the UK’s Security and Defence sector.

Following the talk from James Quinault, the Director of Cyber Security and Information Assurance, from the Cabinet Office, Andy Williams, Head of International Development at Titania will be speaking on the 11^th of March 2014. The presentation will focus on the innovative use of UK technology across US governmental institutions and the mutual benefits to network security and compliance auditing.

Titania comes with extensive experience in the cyber security field and Andy will also talk about Titania's membership of the Malvern Cyber Cluster and its commitment to supporting the development of cyber innovation and skills. 

Titania’s cybersecurity solutions Nipper Studio and Paws Studio are network security and compliance auditing tools already popular among military and governmental departments, in the US as well as UK, Germany, France and Australia.

Andy will talk about how to begin with, Nipper Studio was trialed by one U.S. Army unit. Subsequently the software was assessed and approved for use on the networks of the armed forces. Later, Paws Studio emerged as an answer to their compliance requirements. It was not long before both tools were shared across a wide variety of government departments and and by organisations in Financial, Communications, Retail and Technology sectors.

The advantage of Nipper Studio is that it can be installed in minutes, it does not store any configuration data and it audits network devices without the need to connect to the network, hence it does not introduce any additional security issues to the organisation. Whilst Paws Studio is a tool that answers today’s requirements for compliance, in line with established policies such as PCI, SANS and DoD STIG.

National Apprenticeship Week in Worcester: Apprentices in Cyber Security

National Apprenticeship Week 2014 sets the spotlight on apprentices all over UK. Last year’s events and media exposure have increased apprenticeship vacancies by 20% in the West Midlands, over August to October 2013.

Here, at Titania, we are aware of how important it is to offer young people an opportunity at the beginning of their career. As an expanding cyber security company, we want people to grow and develop alongside us.

Apprenticeships in Worcester have increased considerably as well. This week, we featured in the news, next to Hewett Recruitment, Worcester College of Technology, Mazak and Sanctuary Group, The Community Housing Group. The wide range of apprentice positions varies from social media, to engineering, HR, plumbing and cyber security.

Cyber security is still a new industry for school-leavers. As it stands, only 7% of infosec professionals are under the age of 29, and a mere 17% of the total IT workforce is female. An initiative called e-skills was launched to address these problems. Through strategic partnerships with the Malvern Cyber Security Cluster and a consortium of key employers, their efforts are starting to make a difference to the world of cyber security.

Despite being a young business, we recognised the need for new talent in the industry and took on a bright apprentice with no previous experience in cyber security. Three years later, Edwin Bentley is one of the key developers of Titania’s Nipper Studio security auditing software which is supplied to 60 countries worldwide, and has become an invaluable member of the team. Certainly for us, apprenticeships have proven to be a great success, for both the company and for Edwin in his career.

As the company matured, we continued to take on people that can grow alongside the business and now we have two more apprentices; Max MacFarlane in the development team and Luke Willmore learning the administrative side of the business. We would like to thank them for their hard work and also acknowledge the dedication of our more experienced staff for doing an excellent job at training our apprentices.
